About the teacher
Hi! I’m Afton, the owner and teacher here at Rhythm Roots Music Studio. Before moving to South Carolina in the fall of 2023, I spent 13 years as a middle school choir teacher in Maryland and have been teaching lessons privately on and off since 2006. I have my bachelor’s degree in Music Education and my master’s degree in Kodaly Music Education which focuses on building strong foundations in music through play and folk music based learning.
In my free time I like to read, crochet, and garden (though I haven’t started one here yet in SC). I am a curious person and enjoy learning new skills and taking on new challenges.
I am so excited to re-open my studio here in Blythewood, SC so that I can continue to build community, explore new ideas, and create beautiful music with you!

Our lessons, available in 30 or 60-minute sessions, can be enjoyed in person or virtually for your convenience. We understand that every student is unique, so we customize each lesson to match their individual goals and learning style.
Private Lessons
I’m currently gauging interest for group classes, which will be organized by instrument, age, and ability level.
Group lessons are a fantastic way for beginners to dive into music and discover their passion for an instrument. They're also perfect for students looking to enhance their current skills in a supportive group setting.
In these 45 minute sessions, students will enjoy playing individually and in group settings, fostering teamwork and musical camaraderie. I strive incorporates engaging activities like games, movement exercises, and composition strategies to make each class dynamic and fulfilling.
GROUP Lessons
Rhythm & Rhyme Family Class
Experience the joy of music with your little one at my upcoming Parent-Child General Music Classes! These 30-minute weekly sessions for babies and toddlers focus on music exploration through play, dance, singing, listening, and hands-on instrument activities.
Parents actively participate in the music-making process, fostering a special bond with their child in a supportive group setting. Join us for a fun and enriching musical journey!
